Leaving for Japan for Professional Growth: I’m a Filipino and I never thought I would have to leave my home country together with my family to live in Japan. Being an expat in Japan is a common experience among many Asians seeking to expand their professional horizons. For me, my life in Japan represents a significant crossroad in life, a transformative journey that often involves adapting to a new culture, language, and way of life. In my case, this journey unfolded over the course of more than a decade, as my husband embarked on a career in a Japanese company while pursuing further studies at a renowned Japanese university.

A Decade in Japan: Juggling Family and Work: My journey in Japan was not only a personal adventure but a family endeavor. While my husband was deeply immersed in his professional pursuits, I assumed the roles of homemaker and mother, taking care of our growing family. At the same time, I recognized the importance of making the most of our stay in Japan by engaging in meaningful activities. With a background in English language, I decided to leverage my skills by teaching English part-time. This allowed me to connect with Japanese children and adults, bridging cultural gaps and creating memorable experiences.

Language and Cultural Challenges: Stepping onto Japanese soil was a humbling experience. Despite having received a solid education in the Philippines, I found myself illiterate in both spoken and written Japanese. This realization highlighted the immense linguistic and cultural gap I needed to bridge during my time in Japan. Learning a new language from scratch and deciphering complex characters posed a formidable challenge. Yet, it was also an opportunity for personal growth and a deeper understanding of the Japanese way of life.

The Beauty of Japanese Culture: Japan’s cultural tapestry is woven with threads of tradition, elegance, and intricate customs. What struck me most was the innate politeness of the Japanese people. Whether in daily interactions or formal settings, the courtesy and respect shown to one another were both heartwarming and inspiring. Moreover, Japan’s calendar is dotted with captivating festivals and holidays, each with its own unique significance. From the dazzling fireworks displays of hanabi to the solemn rites of shichi-go-san, celebrating a child’s growth, and the romanticism of tanabata, the star festival, these cultural events added depth to my Japanese experience. In the city of Gifu, where we resided, a unique and rare tradition unfolds along the picturesque Nagara River. Here, tourists have the exceptional opportunity to embark on boats outfitted with dining tables, sailing gracefully along the tranquil waters. As they glide along, guests are treated to a gastronomic delight: succulent roasted ayu, a local freshwater trout, skillfully caught by cormorants. These aquatic birds, specially trained for many years, work in tandem with the fishermen who accompany the guests on the boat, creating a mesmerizing and unforgettable experience.

Navigating Social Circles: While the allure of Japanese culture was undeniable, the challenges of integration into social circles persisted. The language barrier remained a formidable obstacle, limiting my interactions and making it difficult to delve into the inner sanctums of Japanese society. Yet, it was also an opportunity to forge connections with those who shared a similar curiosity about foreign cultures. Over time, I discovered that genuine interest, respect, and a willingness to adapt could gradually dissolve these barriers, creating lasting friendships and connections.

Expanding My Worldview: Living in Japan expanded my worldview in profound ways. It made me acutely aware of the distinctness of cultures from my own. To truly appreciate the intricacies and beauty of Japanese culture, I realized the importance of deep immersion. Whether it was participating in tea ceremonies, donning traditional kimono attire, or attending local festivals, each experience allowed me to internalize and grasp the uniqueness, beauty, and significance of specific cultural features in Japan.

Cherished Memories: The memories of my life in Japan with my family remain etched in my heart. It was a time when my husband was a dedicated laboratory researcher, tirelessly pursuing scientific advancements. The birth of our son during our stay in Japan marked a pivotal moment in our lives. While the journey had its share of initial difficulties, it ultimately blossomed into a personally enriching experience, especially in the later years. It was a journey of growth, resilience, and embracing the beauty of a culture that had once seemed so distant.

Looking back, I realized that my life in Japan was a profound chapter in my personal journey. It was a period of transformation, where challenges and opportunities coalesced to create a rich tapestry of experiences. It taught me the value of adaptability, the beauty of cultural diversity, and the enduring power of family. While my time in Japan may have come to an end, the memories and lessons from this remarkable journey continue to shape my perspective on the world.
